Edisto Beach State Park....Magnolia Plantation some other post!

It's stunning here. A long, white, shell strewn beach, the dunes right in front of our camper. Air that is suddenly soft enough to allow leaving our door and windows open as the sun sets beyond the palm trees. Marley has enjoyed a wet and sandy romp, Laurie is cooking freshly caught local shrimp. Earlier this afternoon, I hitched a ride with
an elderly gentleman in a golf cart further up by the main road (a long walk which I was happy to take but he so graciously offered that I decided to say yes for the hell of it) and he told me that he and his wife have been camping here since 1975 and that for a camping/rv space from March through December, you have to reserve 11 months in advance. He said they always call right at 11 months before, and still don't always get one of their favorite spots—which happen to be in the area within which we are now parked.

Tomorrow afternoon another arctic blast will blow in and we have been told to expect hail and/or freezing rain. We have delayed the half hour drive to visit Beaufort (former home of author Pat Conroy, who's rather emotional, Southern, intimate novels I have long enjoyed) until the weather "clears" at the end of the week. It's not especially fun to wander through a charming little town in cold rain. That's okay. We are enjoying this one day of weather grace and will weather the storm in our little cosy space. I will keep on designing my Harvard Law School book project, Laurie will continue re-writing sections of "Gabriel Burning," and so on.... It's odd, we are trying to be really "laid back" and SLOW, but at the same time, there is so much to see! So many places to visit. I suppose only a week and a day into the trip, it's not so surprising that we are finding our nomadic feet.

By the way, I'm enjoying being "at home" and still getting up and leaving, getting on the road, and arriving somewhere completely new. Each place is full of surprises. It's a glorious feeling; that combination. At home and uncannily new each and every day.

  1. That's the cool thing about an RV. You can feel at home anywhere!
